Hitachi digital camera only working on computer?

i recently found my hitachi HDC-881E digital camera that was last used summer 2009. it wouldnt turn on but i plugged the camera into the computer and it gives me the option of PC, Printer or PC cam. i am able to view pictures from the camera on the computer, BUT once i disconnect the camera, it turns of and then doesnt work. i have left it to charge and still no use. any way i can fix this?
